Is buying a gaming monitor worth it?

Are gaming monitors really worth it?

“Do I really need a gaming monitor?” This question has been asked on gaming forums more than just once, and for a good reason. Gaming monitors often are more expensive than regular monitors, so it begs the question:

Refresh Rate

First of all, we need to talk about the refresh rate. Most monitors put out 60HZ. What that means in a normal person’s language is that the computer screen will show 60 images a second. This refresh rate differs from gaming PCS, many of which offer a 120HZ refresh rate. As you may have guessed, this means that these computers refresh their screen at a rate of 120 times a second. But how big of a difference does this really make?

Well, it depends on the games you are playing. If you’re playing a game that runs at 30 frames per second, it doesn’t matter which screen you get as they will look nearly identical. A monitor with 60HZ will display each image twice, where the 120HZ monitor will display it four times. Either way, the screen is showing 30 different pictures every second.

But, if you are playing a game that has an FPS of over 60, it’s very important to have a monitor that can keep up. If you’re playing a game at 80 FPS with a monitor that runs at 60HZ, you will still be seeing 60 pictures a second. If you have a 120HZ monitor, you’ll see the full 80. This is important for high-pace games, as only a gaming monitor or one with a high number of HZ will be able to show you all of the pictures every second.

Another important factor when considering buying a gaming monitor is that of resolution. Resolution is the amount of pixels on a screen. The higher the resolution, the more clear the picture is. Gaming monitors will sacrifice the cheap price tag in order to give players a higher resolution. After all, you don’t want to lose the visual beauty of a game because of a bad monitor.

Other Factors

Other factors to include when deciding whether or not to purchase a gaming monitor include screen size, ability to tilt, and brightness. Many gamers want their monitor to be big enough to enjoy the games they play. Many non-gamer computer users don’t care about screen size as long as they can see their work. Often times gamers will want to tilt the computer screen to be at a comfortable angle for long uses. These factors play into whether or not it is worth it to buy a gaming variant.

The Verdict

There are many factors to consider on whether or not it is worth it to buy a gaming monitor. In the end, it comes down to price. Is it worth it to pay a bit more for a higher refresh rate, resolution, and size? That’s up to the consumer.
